How to Study With Gemini Study Notebooks
Google's study notebooks do something most AI study tools don't: they test you before they teach you. Here's how to set one up from your own class files, and where it still needs supervision.
A study notebook is a mode inside the Gemini app where you upload your actual course materials — syllabus, lecture notes, readings — state a learning goal, and take a diagnostic quiz. Google says Gemini then breaks that goal into more than 100 specific learning objectives, groups them into topics, labels each one as a strength, a focus area or not started, and serves short lessons and follow-up quizzes aimed at the gaps. The difference from a normal chatbot session is the order of operations: it finds out what you don't know first, instead of explaining whatever you happened to ask about.
Study notebooks launched on 25 June 2026, initially on the web for personal accounts in all languages where Gemini is available, with school-issued accounts and mobile following. Since 19 August they also have a front door: a student hub at gemini.google.com/students with shortcuts to start a notebook, make flashcards or take a quiz.
First, clear up the naming
Three Google products now sound alike, and students are picking the wrong one.

Setting up a notebook that's actually useful
Ten minutes, once per module. The setup determines everything the notebook does afterwards, so it's worth doing properly rather than dumping a folder in.
1. Upload the syllabus first
Before any lecture notes, give it the syllabus or module handbook. That's the document that tells the model what's examinable, in what proportion, and in what order — without it, it weights everything equally and you get lessons on the interesting tangents rather than the assessed content.
2. Add the material you were actually set
Lecture slides, your own notes, the assigned chapters, past papers if you have them. Resist adding a textbook you never opened; a notebook built on 400 pages you'll never be examined on produces objectives you don't need.
3. State a goal narrow enough to fail
"Learn chemistry" produces a useless objective list. Name the exam, the level and the date.
My goal: pass the second-year organic chemistry midterm on 14 October.
The syllabus I uploaded lists the examinable topics - build the objectives from that
document only, not from general chemistry.
Weight the objectives toward what the syllabus and the past papers spend the most
marks on. Before you start, tell me which topics you are treating as high-weight
and which as low, so I can correct you if you have misread the course.
That last paragraph is the useful bit. Make it show its reasoning about your course before it builds 100 objectives on a misreading of it.
4. Take the diagnostic honestly
The whole system calibrates off this quiz. Guessing well on it buys you a dashboard full of green "strengths" and lessons you don't need. Where you don't know, say so or answer wrong — the reward for a bad diagnostic score is a study plan that targets the right things.
Four prompts that improve what it gives back
Turn a lesson into recall practice. Reading a generated lesson is passive; the studying happens when you retrieve it.

After each answer: tell me if I'm right, and if I'm wrong, give me a hint
rather than the answer and let me try again.
After five questions, tell me which specific sub-topic I'm weakest on and why
you think so, quoting what I got wrong.
Make it cite your material, not its memory.
Answer using only the documents in this notebook.
For every claim, name the source file and the section it came from.
If the answer isn't in my materials, say "not in your sources" and stop -
do not fill the gap from general knowledge.
Find the gap between your notes and the syllabus. This one regularly turns up a whole examinable topic missing from a set of notes.
Compare my uploaded lecture notes against the syllabus.
List every syllabus topic that my notes cover thinly or not at all.
For each one, quote the syllabus wording and tell me what's missing from my notes.
Rank them by how many marks the syllabus suggests they're worth.
Don't teach me anything yet - I just want the list.

Rules:
- One fact, definition or step per card. No multi-part cards.
- Front is a question, back is the shortest correct answer.
- Use the wording from my uploaded notes where it's accurate.
- Flag any card where my notes and your general knowledge disagree,
and tell me what the disagreement is.
That last rule matters more than it looks. Disagreements between your notes and the model are either an error in your notes or a hallucination — and either way you want to know before it goes into a deck you'll drill fifty times. The free bits you don't need a notebook for
Two of the August announcements are worth knowing about because they need zero setup.
- Practice quizzes in Search. Google says these are "globally available in English free of charge, in both AI Overviews and AI Mode", for any subject, with an explanation for each answer and links to read further. You can also request them for the ACT, AP, ENEM, GRE, JEE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET and SAT, with content from partners including The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah and Akira Enem. Google is also offering full-length practice SAT tests in Gemini at no cost, with JEE, NEET, ENEM, ACT and GRE listed as coming.
- Lens on a worksheet. Photograph a problem you're stuck on and Lens is being updated to explain the concept, point out where you may have gone wrong and coach you through the steps. Google says this "will roll out globally in English over the coming weeks" — as of today it may not have reached you yet.
Search can also generate study documents from files you upload or from an AI Mode thread, which Google says has rolled out globally in English in AI Mode. It's a faster route to a one-pager than a full notebook when you just need a summary sheet.
The free student plan, and its catch
Eligible US college students can claim a year of Google AI Pro — normally $19.99 a month — through Google's student offer, which includes Gemini Spark, roughly 4x higher usage limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage. Students outside the US get a year of Google AI Plus instead, in over 140 markets — Google's exclusion list includes Bolivia, Albania, Canada, Macau, Hong Kong and Tunisia — with 2x usage limits and 400 GB of storage. Student status is verified through SheerID, and the offer can be redeemed until 31 December 2026.
The catch is ordinary but easy to miss: Google states that unless cancelled earlier, the plan charges automatically once the free year ends — $19.99 a month for AI Pro, $4.99 a month for AI Plus. Claim it if you'll use it, then put a reminder in your calendar for the week before it renews, while you're still a student and not a graduate discovering a subscription.
Where it goes wrong
Three failure modes worth watching for, none of them unique to Google.
- Confident errors in generated lessons. Grounding a notebook in your own files reduces invention but doesn't eliminate it, and a lesson written in a calm explanatory voice is exactly the kind of thing students memorise without checking. Anything that will end up on an exam answer gets checked against the actual source — the hallucination checklist is the short version.
- Reading instead of retrieving. A progress dashboard filling with green is satisfying and is not the same as being able to answer a question cold. If a session was all reading and no recall, it wasn't a study session.
- Uploading things you shouldn't. Recorded lectures, licensed textbooks, other people's coursework, anything with classmates' names in it. Run the upload checklist once per module and you'll never have to think about it again.
A realistic weekly routine
- Once per module — build the notebook: syllabus, notes, readings, goal, diagnostic.
- Twice a week, 25 minutes — open the top focus area, run the recall prompt, don't read the lesson until you've attempted the questions.
- Weekly, 10 minutes — run the syllabus gap prompt and fix the thinnest set of notes by hand, in your own words.
- Spare minutes — practice quizzes in Search on your phone. No setup, no notebook, no excuse.
- Before an exam — retake the diagnostic. The comparison against your first attempt tells you what actually moved.
FAQ
Is NotebookLM the same thing as a Gemini study notebook?
They are two different things with confusingly similar names. On 16 July 2026 Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, and says it remains a standalone product focused on being your research tool — that's the app you load sources into to summarise, chat with and generate Audio Overviews from. Study notebooks are a feature inside the Gemini app itself: you give them your class materials and a goal, and they quiz you, build lessons and track progress. Use Gemini Notebook to understand a set of readings, and a study notebook to drill toward an exam.
Do study notebooks cost money?
Google announced study notebooks on 25 June 2026 for personal accounts in all languages where Gemini is available, without naming a paid tier as a requirement, and separately offers eligible college students a free year of Google AI Pro in the US or Google AI Plus in over 140 other markets. Can I use a study notebook without breaking my school's AI policy?
Quizzing yourself on your own course materials is studying, and almost no policy restricts it. The two places to be careful are uploads and output. Check whether your course or institution allows uploading copyrighted readings, recorded lectures or anything containing other students' work, and never paste a notebook's explanation into an assignment as your own writing. If your syllabus is silent on AI, ask before you rely on it rather than after.
Are the practice quizzes in Google Search free?
Yes. Bottom line
The diagnostic-first design is a real improvement on asking a chatbot to explain things, because it removes the step where you decide what you're bad at — which is the step students get wrong. Feed it the syllabus, answer the first quiz honestly, and treat every generated lesson as a draft to be checked rather than a fact to be memorised. Then close it and try to answer the questions from memory, which is where the learning was the whole time.
